Shivapuri Day Hike

The Shivapuri Day Hike involves driving to Budhanil Kantha, taking a 3–4 hour hike to Shivapuri Hill, and then making a 2-hour descent back to Budhanil Kantha, followed by a short drive back to Kathmandu. This entire trip is completed in one day.

Shivapuri Hill, standing 2,563 meters above sea level, is the second-highest hill surrounding Kathmandu Valley and is a preferred destination for bird watchers. The hike offers stunning views of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan ranges. Bagdwar, the source of the Bagmati River, is another highlight along the trail.

The hike starts with a short drive to Budhanil Kantha, where the temple and a large reclining Vishnu statue are located. From there, the trail leads into the Shivapuri Conservation Area, a protected region home to over 500 species of wildlife. Past an army checkpoint, hikers enter dense forests on steep slopes. Most of the trail is stone-paved, making for an easy and relaxed walk, while the views of the valley become increasingly impressive as you ascend.

Along the way, hikers pass Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist monastery at 2,340 meters offering meditation classes for nuns. The final stretch of the trail becomes steeper and narrower, but the calming scenery makes it worthwhile. At the top of Shivapuri, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding Himalayas. The descent back to Budhanil Kantha takes about two hours, followed by a short drive back to Kathmandu.

Shivapuri is ideal for bird watching and nature walks. The trail offers opportunities to observe various flora and fauna, learn about local biodiversity, and enjoy peaceful surroundings. Additionally, the Budhanil Kantha Temple and Nagi Gompa provide insight into Hindu and Buddhist practices in Nepal.

This day trek provides beautiful views of the Himalayas and a unique experience that combines nature, wildlife, and cultural sites. To enjoy the full experience of this day trek, there are some logistical factors and tips to consider. There are no requirements for specialized fitness preparation, as most hiking involves a gentle walk with a guide. To enjoy the full experience, make sure to start early. In the winter months, additional layers of clothing are recommended as the mornings can be cold.

The Shivapuri National Park region is one of the most respected places to hike because it offers a perfect combination of exposed trails, fresh mountain air, and gentle winds in the morning. To enjoy the trek, wear light and comfortable hiking shoes, layered clothing, and bring sunscreen and sunglasses. We also suggest carrying a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the hike.

While hiking this trail, there are opportunities to explore some of the Buddhist monasteries, Gompas, and stupas along the way. However, some areas have limited or no cell service, which allows visitors to fully focus on nature, culture, and relaxation.

With licensed local guides, trekkers learn about the culture and traditions of the area, the history of the temples, and the ecology of the Himalayan region. The hike offers scenic viewpoints, peaceful forests, and glimpses of rural life. Visitors can enjoy photography of landscapes, mountains, and wildlife such as birds and butterflies.
